Course Description:

This course introduces and develops content and skills in workshop, tools and equipment safety, materials, processes, and surface finishing in bamboo craft. It is a buildup course focusing to enrich the learner from foundational crafting skills acquired at year 1 level (soft and hard strip weaving and fibre craft).  Workshop safety is of paramount significance as individuals’ working and learning in workshops equipped with sophisticated machinery must be oriented on the basic operational functions of each so that unwanted injuries or damages are minimal or avoided whilst the return is high in terms of productivity. Tools deal with the conventional and improvised hand tools. Materials deal with researching the history of coconut fibre craft and different uses in PNG and the neighboring countries. Processes involve harvesting and processing of coconut fibers and manufacturing products. Practical involves the development of the manipulative and process skills with tools, materials, processes, and finishing through the design process in planning, costing, making, and marketing of graded projects teaching safety, creativity, quality workmanship, care and storage of materials, tools, and equipment.
