This course introduces and develops content and skills in workshop, tools and equipment safety, materials, processes, and surface finishing in bamboo craft. It is a buildup course focusing on enriching the learner from foundational crafting skills acquired at year 1 level (soft and hard strip weaving and fibre craft).  Workshop safety is of paramount significance as individuals’ working and learning in workshops equipped with sophisticated machinery must be oriented on the basic operational functions of each so that unwanted injuries or damages are minimal or avoided whilst the return is high in terms of productivity. Tools deal with conventional and improvised hand tools. Materials deal with researching the history of bamboo and different types of bamboo available in PNG and the neighboring countries. Processes involve harvesting, grading and storage, bamboo treatment methods, dyeing splints, bleaching, adhesives and surface finishes deals with functions, finishing materials, types of clear finishes, preparation for surface finishing, and care of brush and varnish. Practice involves the development of manipulative and process skills with tools, materials, processes, and finishing through the design process in planning, costing, making, and marketing of graded projects teaching safety, creativity, quality workmanship, care and storage of materials, tools, and equipment.
