This course is designed to provide you with fundamental knowledge in community and rural education. The first part of the course looks at the fundamental aspects of community and rural education, what is community, community education and rural education, as well as various other important themes and their relationship to education. These include definitions, philosophy and principles, functions and practice, management and governance and the history of community education. The second part of this course deals with rural education, its characteristics, and case studies in selected countries. The third part of the course relates to community and rural education in a number of countries. The idea is to familiarize students with community education in both developed and developing worlds, namely Sweden, Australia, Cuba and some countries in Africa. The main purpose here is to introduce these systems so that students see the similarities and differences with PNG and have a better understanding of the great diversity of community education systems in different parts of the world. More importantly, to view how PNG as a developing nation can move forward in community education and development.
