You have enrolled in this unit as a teacher education unit. It is one of the prerequisite units you are required to complete this semester. The tutors and I look forward to interact with you. Welcome aboard!
Educational psychology (EP) concerns the study of how we learn and behave in different settings; it also considers the benefits of educational interventions and the psychology of learning and teaching. For both experienced (practising) and future teachers, this course endeavours to broaden our understanding of learning and teaching processes and teacher-student interactions in schools. It aims to equip you with the understanding of these processes and principles of students’ learning and development. It further expands our thinking of these principles that underpin a student’s lifespan development and learning, and how we can intervene to enhance their school experiences. These processes are examined in the context of EP and human developmental theories. Secondly, the course aims to expand our understanding of the ‘whys, hows and whens’ of student learning and effective teaching. ‘How can I gain an insight into my students’ learning? and ‘What enhances their learning?’ are some of the many questions this course allows you to explore. Throughout the semester, you are encouraged to relate these theories and practices to typical PNG classroom contexts. The assessable tasks are designed to further expand these and other perspectives of our roles as teachers.
