The course introduces students to the different approaches and principles of guidance and counseling. It further, enables them to acquire the basic knowledge and skills in guidance and counseling which they will harness in other units in the program. Upon completion of the unit students will be able to reflect on the guidance and counseling services provided in schools and plan to enhance and improve guidance and counseling for students and teachers.
The second part focuses on engaging students in acquiring basic counseling skills which they can harness in either schools or other agencies. Due to the education reform schools now have huge numbers which has resulted in an increase in antisocial behaviour, hence, teachers and other social workers need basic counseling skills to provide effective counseling service in their schools and community. We will also discuss the responsibility of the school counsellor as outlined in the Behaviour Management Policy for the National education System of Papua New Guinea.
Through the knowledge and skills acquired from this course, they will be well equipped to explore the talents and potential of their students, while preparing them for life in the 21st century. It will strengthen their ability to exercise active listening skills, reflect on students’ problems, and help them choose potential solutions to their problems. The course will also enable Student Teachers to design school-wide guidance and counselling programmes for their respective schools.
