This course will be offered in Modular Series. Module 1 Principles of
Community Development and Module 2 Sustainable Development. This merged course
module combines the principles of community development with sustainable
development. It focuses on the interplay between social, economic, and
environmental dimensions, emphasizing the role of communities in fostering
sustainable practices. The course is designed to provide a critical
understanding of theoretical and practical developments in the evolution (and
contested nature) of community development in a sustainable way with
comparative societal context. It includes an international focus and examines
sustainable development associated with economic and environmental issues by
focusing on the impact of globalization in the local context, the role of the
private sectors and non-government organizations (NGOs). This course also
considers the evolving models of the economic evaluation of sustainable
development initiatives and programs and attention to some of the past and
current management methods and practices associated with sustainable
development. Furthermore, the theoretical perspective developed in this course concerns how
community development interventions facilitate, strengthen and improve less
advantaged communities, empower their residents to define and participate in
the development process, and interact in larger social, environmental,
political and economic systems in a sustainable way.
