Midwifery Practice 1 is a foundational course that introduces students to the essential clinical skills and knowledge required for safe midwifery practice. The course focuses on the normal physiology of reproduction, pregnancy, labour, childbirth, and the postpartum period.
Emphasis is placed on developing students’ knowledge, clinical skills, and professional attitudes to support evidence-based, respectful maternity care. Students will learn to work in partnership with women and their families, promoting safe practices while avoiding outdated or harmful interventions.
Key topics include the physiology of reproduction and pregnancy, psychosocial aspects of childbearing, medication use during pregnancy and childbirth, breastfeeding, and postnatal care. Understanding normal processes enables early identification of complications, appropriate management, and timely referral.
The course also promotes critical thinking, effective communication, and lifelong learning, preparing students to become competent, compassionate, and skilled midwives who contribute to improving maternal and newborn health outcomes.
