Principles of Organic Chemistry for semester 2, 2025.In this course, we will be covering;
Review of bonding in alkanes, alkenes and alkynes (sp3, sp2, sp1), bond geometry, functional groups, structural isomerism, resonance. Conformations of alkanes and cycloalkanes, stereoisomerism (cis/trans, e/z., R/S) in cycloalalkanes, cycloalkenes and alkenes. Alcohols, ethers and thiols: nomenclature, preparation, properties and reactions. Benzene and Concept of Aromaticity: structures, resonance, nomenclature, phenols, and reactions. Aldehydes and ketones: Structure, nomenclature, properties and reactions; acetals and ketals, Grignard reaction, aldol condensation. Carboxylic acids: structure, nomenclature, properties and reactions, derivatives of carboxylic acids: ester, amides, anhydrides and their reactions. Amines, amino acids and protein chemistry.
