The unit will explore the ancient origins of sport and games and the birth of ancient Olympics. It will cover the development of sport through the Middle Ages through to the start of the modern Olympics movement.
Integrated into this historical perspective will be the study of the development of sporting ideals and philosophies and their relevance to modern sport. The sociology of sports, recreation and leisure will be examined in detail with special reference to the Melanesian culture and the Pacific Way.
