This course provides educators with the essential knowledge and practical skills to effectively teach students with intellectual impairments and developmental disorders in Papua New Guinea. Participants will explore common conditions such as intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, and Down syndrome, gaining an understanding of their unique needs within the PNG cultural and educational settings.
The course emphasizes evidence-based teaching strategies, including the development of individualized education plans (IEPs), differentiated instruction, and behaviour management techniques suitable for PNG classrooms. Special attention is given to creating inclusive learning environments that promote active participation, social-emotional growth, and academic success for students with diverse needs.
Participants will learn how to use assessment tools to identify students’ specific learning needs and track progress, ensuring interventions are tailored effectively. The course also covers collaboration with families, local communities, and special education teams, recognizing the importance of cultural sensitivities and community involvement in PNG.
Legal frameworks and ethical considerations related to special education are discussed to ensure compliance and promote best practices. Additionally, the integration of assistive technologies and culturally appropriate resources will be explored to support inclusive education.
It is anticipated that after completing this course, educators will be equipped to implement strategies that foster the development of students with intellectual and developmental challenges, advocating for inclusive practices within PNG’s educational system.
