This course is designed to introduce the theoretical and empirical investigation related to gender and schooling. It is designed so that students can acquire the capacity to make informed judgements about gender and education and to understand the problems, conflicts, and difficulties inherent in the struggle for equal educational opportunity and other Gender Based Issues. The course also investigates sexuality and gender identity to explain the ways in which gender, sexuality, class, race/ethnicity and nationality interact to shape our experience and culture, and the social institutions we inhabit. The central aim of the course is to introduce students to both the social and cultural realities of the lives of men and women and the theoretical and practical responses that challenge conventional power relations. While the subject will be introduced in a global context, special emphasis is placed on the PNG context. Taking this course will also help build the capacity of student teachers
