This course is developed to assist students to learn the aspects of Physical Geography dealing
with natural environment. It will cover the natural environment of either biotic or abiotic in nature.
Most of the example in the course materials will be drawn from Papua New Guinea’s physical
environment with others from other countries in the world. The students will learn the natural
processes at work in the environment they live in and be able to identify the systematic linkages
between the field of Climatology, hydrology, Geology Geomorphology, Soil formation processes
Biotic processes, oceanography, Environmental Science and Management etc…Case studies of
the issues will be based on Papua New Guinea with other examples drawn from other Pacific
Island countries and other neighboring countries.
The students will learn how the physical environment influences the human settlements and
sustainable livelihoods of communities.
The course is also developed to give deeper understanding of the human dimensions of
environmental changes, human impacts uses &management, trade and planning etc.
