In this course, students will study Geography of the Pacific Islands—a geographic realm that
encompasses the regions of Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. Studying the
geography of the Pacific is more than just knowing the locations of the countries and
island groups of the region. This course aims to introduce you to human geography
approaches to a range of events that have created contemporary Pacific. Students will
explore causes of transformation of the Island landscapes, and ongoing debates about
environmental alterations, cultural identities, economic development, and globalization.
The students will also take a critical look at issues affecting the region and stress the importance of understanding the diversity of the Pacific Island environments and peoples.
