The understanding of genetics and its role in plant and animal production gives the student, the foundation knowledge on the science of breeding and improvement of animal and crop species for food and fiber. This course gets students to deliberately plan breeding programs that will improve animal stocks and crop varieties. The genetic principles and conventional and biotechnological methods for plants and animal improvement shall be the focus of study and key contents will be introduced by the course lecturer. Most learning will be via lectures, tutorial and laboratory work and where possible field trips to industries involved in plant and animal breeding will also be included for the learning of students.
