This is an introductory course on the basic principles of animal production and provides understanding of the important scientific concepts associated with animal anatomy and physiology. Students will gain knowledge of different livestock practices and issues underpinning the management of animals and roles in rural development - food security, income generation and cultural and socio-economic development. The major areas covered include the purpose and role of animal production, history, classification and identification of domesticated species and breeds of livestock, growth and development, functions of different organs and systems, animal behavior, animal welfare and bio-security measures.
