The course introduces students to the general biology and ecology of fish and aquaculture systems including pond and cage culture and re-stocking of inland capture fisheries. The current status of aquaculture in PNG. Techniques and methods used in freshwater fish farming, the different fish species as well as other important aquatic animals. The major topics to be covered: fish species and the types of water they inhabit, fish aquatic resources, systems of aquaculture, biology of a fish pond and control of pond environment, reproduction in fish, nests and breeding habits and management aspects of fish farming including facilities and nutrition. The importance of fish farming in human nutrition and income generation. Integration with crop and livestock farming. Students taking the course will be expected to gain knowledge and skills required to develop and manage aquaculture in their communities or schools.
