The course is designed to introduce students to the major livestock species and production in PNG and elsewhere with emphasis on mono-gastric species. It will provide students with knowledge of the systems of livestock production while emphasizing the importance of livestock in uplifting rural welfare and human nutrition nationally through food production and employment generation. The roles of animals in agricultural work and transport, provision of wastes for fertilizer and fuel, supporting ancillary industries, utilizing resources and playing important roles in local economies. Topics for study include: Systems of production; poultry production; pig production; rabbit production; work animals; and important aspects of welfare, nutrition and management of each species of livestock.
