This course will provide participants with an understanding of Jolly Phonics as a fun and child centred approach to teaching literacy through synthetic phonics. The Jolly Phonics course is designed to be visual, tactile, and aural, so children are applying all their senses in developing their literacy skills. It also ties in nicely with the Early Learning Standards. Participants will be introduced to the 42 letter sounds and the basic skills of teaching Jolly Phonics. They will learn strategies that could be used to develop a child's interest and skills related to listening, speaking, reading and writing that form the foundation of a language arts curriculum. The effective use of children's literature, storytelling, puppetry and dramatic play will be described. The importance of cultural considerations and individual differences will also be addressed.
