This course introduces the field of gender studies with a specific focus on its application within educational contexts. Students will explore the ways in which gender influences educational experiences, policies, and outcomes, examining how schools and educational systems both reflect and shape gender norms. Through interdisciplinary readings, discussions, and case studies, the course will address topics such as gender identity, sexuality, intersectionality, gender bias in curriculum, and the impact of educational practices on different genders. Students will critically engage with theoretical frameworks from feminist theory, queer theory, and masculinities studies, as well as investigate the role of education in promoting gender equity. They will develop a nuanced understanding of gender dynamics in education and will be equipped to analyze and address issues of gender inequality in educational settings.
