This course will continue to develop students understanding of basic fundamentals in chemistry and prepare them for upper level chemistry. The topics include Thermochemistry; heat of reactions, enthalpy changes, standard enthalpies of formation, Hess’s Law, bond enthalpy, entropy, Gibbs free energy and equilibrium, Solutions and colligative properties, concentrations of solutions; molarity, mass percent, weight/volume percentage, mole fraction, molality, phase diagrams, Raoult’s Law, freezing point depression and boiling point elevation, osmotic pressure, liquids and properties, Surface chemistry; soaps and saponification, synthetic detergents, colloids; Introduction to nuclear chemistry, radioactivity, binding energy, kinetics, carbon dating, radiation, nuclear fission and nuclear fusion; Gases; Environmental chemistry; Water and wastewater engineering
