The course is designed to introduce students to the different ruminant production and management systems. It provides the opportunity to study the development and structure of the local industries, their weaknesses and strengths and improvement strategies. Consideration is given to environmental influences on the genetic potential of these animals to perform under different situations and the integration of principles of nutrition, breeding, physiology, production and marketing. Students will acquire knowledge about the key livestock species and respective management and husbandry practices while developing sound understanding of the scientific bases for the application of such concepts in production.
