This course is designed to provide first year undergraduate students with the opportunity to develop their fundamental knowledge and skills in effective oral communication, academic writing and managing their studies. It aims to introduce to students basic understanding of effective oral and written communication, study management skills and to write academically as expected at a tertiary institution. These competences are demonstrated through essay writing and writing critical reviews using relevant research skills such as critical reading, note taking and summarizing. The course also aims to further develop students’ referencing competence in author-date referencing styles, paraphrasing, and summarizing, as well as competently constructing sentences, paragraphs and using transitional signals effectively to enhance their writing. The course is offered and housed under the Academic Learning Centre.
